The remaining five prototypes are set aside for media demonstrations and customer trials to gauge public and industry reactions.

Unlike electric vehicles powered by lithium batteries, the hydrogen-powered Hilux generates electricity through a reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. The Hilux prototype utilizes fuel cell technology initially developed for the Toyota Mirai, Toyota's acclaimed hydrogen fuel cell sedan.

Currently, Toyota is working on a third-generation fuel cell system set to debut around 2026–2027. This new generation aims to improve energy efficiency by an estimated 20%, alongside significant advances in power density. The increased production volumes and technological advancements are expected to drive costs down by nearly a third, making hydrogen-powered vehicles more affordable and accessible.

Toyota is also researching scalable fuel cell stacks with adaptable power outputs, a feature that could accommodate a wide variety of vehicle types.
